Intra-ocular Melanoma/Other Select tumours
Episcleral I125 (Model 6711) Plaque Brachytherapy
In the year 2007, the American Cancer Society estimated 2,340 new cases of all primary intraocular cancers (eye and orbit) would be diagnosed and 220 deaths. Approximately 1300 to 1800 cases will be melanomas. Primary eye cancers can occur at any age, however most cases occur in people over the age of 50.
From 1986 to 2003, The Collaborative Ocular Melanoma (COMS) Group conducted a multicenter randomised clinical trial of I-125 Plaque Brachytherapy versus enucleation. A 12 year follow up of patients confirmed earlier reports of no survival differences between patients whose tumours were treated with I-125 Plaque Brachytherapy and those treated with enucleation. Patients treated with brachytherapy reported significantly better visual function than patients treated with enucleation, with respect to driving and peripheral vision for up to 2 years following treatment.

High Activity I-125 Seeds/ Other Select tumours
High Activity I-125 seeds are indicated for interstitial treatment of tumours which have the following characteristics: unresectable, localised, and moderate radiosensitivity.
Additionally, high activity I-125 seeds are indicated to treat residual tumours concurrent with or at the completion of other treatment modalities, such as external beam radiation therapy or chemotherapy. As with other brachytherapy sources, treatment of tumours in generally poor condition (e.g., ulcerated) is not recommended.
